BOOKS BY GALE WEATHERS

The Stab films were all originally inspired by books by Gale Weathers. Some based on true events, others complete works of fiction. Below you'll find information on each of Gale's books.

WRONGLY ACCUSED

“Wrongly Accused: The Maureen Prescott Murder” is Gale Weathers’ first book and her debut true-crime account within the Scream universe. The book focuses on Gale’s belief that Sidney Prescott wrongly accused Cotton Weary of murdering her mother, Maureen Prescott, and follows Gale’s attempt to prove Cotton’s innocence.

The book is an important part of Gale’s early career, establishing her as a controversial journalist willing to challenge the official version of Maureen Prescott’s murder. It also created major tension between Gale and Sidney, since Sidney was not fond of the book or the way Gale publicly handled her mother’s death.

“Wrongly Accused” was mentioned in the original Scream and later referenced again in Scream 2022, where Gale reflects on the consequences of writing about the murders. Although the book had been part of the franchise’s story for years, it was not actually shown on screen until Scream VI, when audiences finally got their first look at it in the Ghostface/Stab shrine.

The book also predates Gale’s later true-crime work, including “The Woodsboro Murders,” which would go on to inspire the in-universe Stab movie franchise.

The Woodsboro Murders

“The Woodsboro Murders” is Gale Weathers’ second book and her non-fiction follow-up to “Wrongly Accused: The Maureen Prescott Murder.” The book is based on the events of the first Scream movie and serves as Gale’s firsthand account of the original Woodsboro killing spree.

Within the Scream universe, the book became one of Gale’s most important works. It helped solidify her reputation as a true-crime author and later became the basis for the in-universe Stab movie franchise.

However, “The Woodsboro Murders” appears to include some false or exaggerated information. For example, Gale describes Dewey Riley as “oozing with inexperience,” and Kenny’s death is described as being caused by the infamous Ghostface gutting him, even though that does not match what actually happened.

In Scream 2, it is also mentioned that the book’s ending differs from what Sidney, Randy, and Gale remember. Several characters from Scream 2 are revealed to have read the book, including Dewey, Randy, Joel, and Debbie Salt.

The book also plays an important role in the final moments of Scream 3. When Dewey asks Gale to sign it, she opens the book and discovers that he has hidden an engagement ring inside.

“The Woodsboro Murders” remains one of Gale’s most significant books because it not only retells the original Ghostface murders, but also helps launch the fictional Stab franchise that becomes such a major part of the Scream universe.

COLLEGE TERROR

“College Terror” is Gale Weathers’ third book and is based on the events that occurred in Scream 2. The book is also known as “The Windsor College Murders,” since it focuses on the Ghostface killing spree that took place at and around Windsor College.

The book was mentioned in Scream 3 and later became the basis for the in-universe movie Stab 2. Within the Scream universe, it continued Gale’s career as a successful true-crime author by documenting another major Ghostface case connected to Sidney Prescott.

“College Terror” was eventually seen on screen in Scream 4 during the bookstore sequence. The cover states that the book is “now a major motion picture,” connecting it directly to Stab 2. The book’s tagline is “The Woodsboro Horror Continues…,” further tying the Windsor College murders back to the original Woodsboro killing spree.

One interesting production detail is that the actual hardcover book beneath the dust jacket is titled “The Gates of Heaven.” It is also mentioned that Gale won the Writer’s Choice Award for the book.

The book later appeared as part of the wider Gale Weathers book collection, including as an Easter egg in Scream 4 and as part of the Ghostface/Stab shrine in Scream VI.
